Italian artist Manna imagines the "you" of the poem as a boy journeying through a series of watercolor landscapes: fields under billowing clouds, misty nights, craggy mountaintops. Kipling's inspirational poem the one that begins, "If you can keep your head when all about you/ Are losing theirs" describes how to preserve one's honor by the principled avoidance of political and moral pitfalls. Kim is a novel by Nobel Prize-winning English author Rudyard Kipling. Asexuality doesn’t exclude people from falling in love, experiencing forms of lust, or having a sexual relationship. Additionally, more stories are acknowledging that there is a wide range of identities creating an asexual spectrum, such as aroace, gray ace, or demisexual whose stories deserve to be told as well.Ĭontrary to popular belief, identifying as asexual, aromantic, or anywhere on the ace spectrum doesn’t imply that a person doesn’t experience or engage in sex or will never enter a relationship. It’s encouraging, then, to see more books include characters that identify as asexual (people who do not experience sexual attraction) and aromantic (people who do not experience romantic attraction). For those in the LGBTQIA+ community, books containing well-written, full of depth characters and storylines have seen an emergence that, while still has a ways to go, is also worth celebrating. If you’re an avid reader, it can be difficult to feel like you’re not represented (or represented well) in the broad selection of books available in the YA genre. This is a world of magnified and dark emotion. It plunged me into a world so vivid and capricious, that when I finished, I found something had shifted and changed within myself. As I read the novel, that also portrays a very tender marriage and the life of a Goan family in Bombay, it drowned me. “ Pinto chases the elusive portrait of a mother who simply said of herself that she was mad. One of the very best books to come out of India in a long, long, time.” – Salman Rushdie, Best of the Booker winner for Midnight’s Children “Em and the Big Hoom is a beautiful book, a child’s-eye view of madness and sorrow, full of love, pain, and, unaccountably, much wild comedy. “ Pinto’s engaging debut, ripe with wit and affection, portrays an unforgettable family of four in middleclass, Catholic Mumbai as their lives revolve around their manic-depressive matriarch, Em.” - Booklist I cannot remember when I last read something as touching as this.” - Amitav Ghosh, author of The Glass Palace 2023 In her very first role on the big screen, Kathryn stars as Michelle, the hopeless coworker and friend of Kate Hudson’s Andie Anderson. 2023 Yashema told Dateline that Brian was close with this coworker. 2023 One anonymous woman reluctantly described to a team of company officials her experience with a new male coworker. With frequent mentions of the dangers of magic, Effie’s recklessness and Anna’s Aunt’s paranoia, it felt like something could go wrong any second. I loved a lot about this book, but my favourite thing was that it made me feel completely unsettled the entire way through. The hugely varied, fascinating cast of characters, and the entertaining mix of romance, angst and dark magic kept me hooked throughout. There’s a lot of character building, scene setting and high-school drama thrown in amongst the magic and the mystery, but it all ties together perfectly. This book is intimidatingly long but not remotely slow. And it quickly becomes unclear who she should believe when it comes to her magic. Anna is swept into a world of magical libraries, potions, spells and witches who proudly wreak havoc. But when Selene, an enchanting family friend who flaunts and thrives on magic, comes to visit with her daughter Effie, and Effie’s best friend Attis, everything that Anna has been taught begins to blur. She has spent her life repressing it, preparing herself for having it cut off entirely by a group called The Binders in order to protect herself from its dangers. Threadneedle is about a teenage witch named Anna, who has been raised by her aunt to detest and fear her own magic. This totally takes over the whole house and soon Ernie ropes his nephew and wife in to help with the labour. When Uncle Ernie gets made redundant he sets up a fish-canning factory in their home. It tells the tale ( or fishtail!) of orphan, Stanley Potts, who lives with his aunt and uncle. The illustrations are flawless and the story almost lives up to them. This artwork continues on the inside in the form of black and white images with Jeffers’ font in chapter headings and occasional passages of text. The first thing I would say is that it is a very beautifully produced book with a stunning cover by Jeffers, featuring his trademark mixed media style of illustration and unique font. As a fan of both writer David Almond and illustrator Oliver Jeffers, I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to review this title. The Telescope in the Ice is, ultimately, a book about people and the thrill of the chase: the struggle to understand the neutrino and the pioneers and inventors of neutrino astronomy. Neutrino physics is perhaps the most active field in particle physics today, and IceCube is at the forefront. And since the neutrino is one of the strangest and least understood of the known elementary particles, this is fertile ground. Its scientific goals span not only astrophysics and cosmology but also pure particle physics. IceCube is alsothe largest particle physics detector ever built. In 2010, it detected the first extraterrestrial high-energy neutrinos and thus gave birth to a new field of astronomy. It employs a cubic kilometer of diamond-clear ice, more than a mile beneath the surface, to detect an elementary particle known as the neutrino. Amundsen-Scott Research Station at the geographic South Pole, IceCube is unlike most telescopes in that it is not designed to detect light.
